The conference will offer principals, assistant principals, and vocational directors many opportunities for quality professional development through breakout sessions, networking, and general session speakers. This year’s conference will feature outstanding speakers and multiple breakout sessions.
On Monday morning Donald Hooton, with the Taylor Hooton Foundation (THF) will address the conference. The THF was formed in 2004 because a promising young teenager and athlete, Taylor Hooton, made a poor, uneducated choice and became actively involved in taking anabolic steroids. This decision led to his death. He committed suicide at the very young age of 17. The THF is the only entity, public or private, in the United States dedicated to providing APED (Appearance and Performance Enhancing Drug: Supplements and Anabolic Steroids) education to kids and their adult influencers. The THF believes if Taylor had been exposed to Hoot’s Chalk Talk education he would still be alive today. Education must be brought to the students and more importantly the proper education and training for all coaches. THF has delivered their education program in venues across the country. They have worked with Major League Baseball and annually talk to kids in all 30 MLB ball parks across the country. Even with all these drug busts in the news, high profile athletes having to do jail time, and some of the largest superstars confessing their decade of use, most kids still have never been talked to about the dangers of these drugs. Over 85% of high school students have never had a parent, teacher, or coach talk with them about the dangers of anabolic steroids and other appearance and performance enhancing drugs. Even more shocking to most people is that the fastest growing user group of anabolic steroids are 8th and 9th grade girls!
On Tuesday morning Dr. Yong Zhao, a professor from Michigan State University, will conduct a three hour workshop entitled “Catching Up or Leading The Way.” The workshop will be based on his book of the same title that describes the irony of American education seeking to become more like China (more testing), India, and other countries at the same time that they are looking to become more like us. He makes a compelling case for us not to lose the creativity we are known for.
Principals, assistant principals, and vocational directors who attend the conference are encouraged to bring members of their faculties to hear Dr. Zhao’s presentation for a special conference rate of $25.
