Recognition Program

The Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) seeks to recognize exemplary performance among secondary school principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students.

General Criteria:

  1. Serves as an active, full-time administrator at the time of district or state selection
  2. Is a member of MASSP (and NASSP for consideration at the national level)
  3. Demonstrates positive impact on education and advocacy for students
  4. Ensures the school climate is positive and reflects high staff and student morale
  5. Demonstrates creativity and imagination in bringing about positive change
  6. Willing to take risks to improve student learning
  7. Moves actively to implement the goals and objectives of the school
  8. Works collaboratively with teachers and other staff to improve the educational program and student achievement
  9. Anticipates emerging problems and acts effectively to resolve them
  10. Involves the community in the life of the school and uses community resources for students

Exemplary New Principal (1-3 years in the profession)
Open to administrators who have completed no more than three years as a principal.
Each MASSP district may select one individual to be recognized at the annual fall conference.

Assistant Principal of the Year
Open to administrators who have been in the same position as assistant principal for three years or more.
Each MASSP district may select one individual to be recognized at the annual fall conference and one of those individuals will be selected as the MASSP Assistant Principal of the Year and will be entered in the NASSP/Virco Assistant Principal of the Year Program.

Middle School Principal of Year
Open to administrators who have been in the same middle school for three years or more.
Each MASSP district may select one individual to be recognized at the annual spring conference and one of those individuals will be selected as the MASSP Middle Level Principal of the Year and will be recognized at the fall conference and entered in the NASSP/MetLife Principal of the Year Program.

High School Principal of the Year
Open to administrators who have been in the same high school for three years or more.
Each MASSP district may select one individual to be recognized at the annual spring conference and one of those individuals will be selected as the MASSP High School Principal of the Year and will be recognized at the fall conference and entered in the NASSP/MetLife Principal of the Year Program.

Forms will be forwarded to the appropriate MASSP district for screening and selection. Those recognized by the district association will be encouraged to submit additional information as a part of the MASSP and NASSP recognition programs.
